PAC Calls for Accountability in Education Sector

Accra: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has called for proactive measures to address issues in the education sector, particularly focusing on student sponsorship and land ownership.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Samuel Atta Mills, the Ranking Member of PAC, emphasized the need for accountability in the sector to ensure the sacrifices made for educational advancements are honored. He expressed concerns that a lack of accountability could negatively impact future generations. Mr. Atta Mills made these remarks during a media briefing at Parliament House in Accra following a public hearing.

The Ranking Member underscored the importance of meticulous attention to administrative tasks, highlighting ongoing issues such as delayed salary payments, scholarship recipients not meeting their obligations, and disputes over land ownership. He advised, "When you give someone a scholarship, follow up on it. When you are given land, make sure you follow up and the land is secured."

Despite these challenges, Mr. Atta Mills, who is also the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem, acknowledged the achievements of certain organizations in managing their surplus, academics, and finances. He remarked, "They have done very well with their surplus, academics, and financials. I think it's about time we give them an applause."

The comments from the Ranking Member come amid ongoing efforts to enhance accountability and transparency within the education sector.
