Ampain: The Nzema Maanle Traditional Council has called on individuals of Nzema descent to embrace speaking the Nzema language as a crucial step in promoting and preserving their indigenous culture.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Council has observed a growing trend of Nzema individuals shying away from their mother tongue in favor of foreign languages. This issue was a focal point of discussion at a general meeting of the Nzema Maanle Traditional Council held in Ampain, located in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region. The meeting was attended by Paramount Chiefs, Divisional Chiefs, educational heads, CEOs of companies, security agencies, media representatives, and other stakeholders from the three Nzema districts.
Madam Augustina Essel Cudjoe, Headmistress of Axim Girls Senior High School and Chairperson of the Nzema Language Committee, initiated the discussion by voicing concerns over the potential extinction of the Nzema language within the next decade if urgent measures are not undertaken. She noted that many parents are not speaking Nzema to their children, indicating a lack of pride among Nzemas in using their native language, even when interacting with foreigners in the Nzema area for business.
Madam Essel Cudjoe criticized the prevalent practice of not utilizing Nzema during church services in several communities and appealed to the Nzema Maanle Council to assist the Nzema Language Committee in its mission to revive and promote the language.
Awulae Attibrukusu III, Acting President of the Nzema Maanle Council, echoed these concerns, emphasizing that indigenous Nzemas should take pride in their language as an integral part of their culture. He stated that the Council is committed to ensuring that the Nzema language is taught and spoken in schools throughout the Nzema area.
