Accra: The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has stated that it cannot proceed with disciplinary actions against two nurses involved in the case of Charles Amissah, a hit-and-run victim, until it receives the official investigation report.
According to Ghana Web, a committee led by Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa conducted an investigation into the incident and recommended that disciplinary measures be taken against nurses Akosua Turkson and Joy Daisy Nelson. The committee suggested these nurses be referred to their respective institutions and the NMC for further action.
However, the NMC has only received a directive from the Ministry of Health through a letter instructing it to take action, but not the detailed report from the committee. Philomina Woolley, the Registrar of the NMC, explained this predicament during a session with Parliament's Health Committee, indicating that the Council is unable to proceed without the comprehensive report.
"We received the letter from the Ministry of Health to sanction the nurses. However, we cannot sanction the nurses without reports from the committee, so we wrote back to the Ministry of Health to furnish us with the reports, and that is where we are. We are yet to receive a response from them," she stated. Woolley emphasized that the absence of the report leaves the Council with no grounds to initiate disciplinary action.
Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, Chairman of the Health Committee, expressed confidence that the report would be delivered to the NMC in the near future. He mentioned that while the Medical and Dental Council has received their respective report, he anticipates that the document concerning the nurses will soon follow suit.
For now, any disciplinary action against the two nurses remains pending until the NMC is equipped with the necessary documentation to proceed.
