Obuasi:The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed strong condemnation regarding the alleged sexual abuse of a female student by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School. The union has called for a comprehensive investigation, emphasizing the need for prosecution if the allegations are confirmed.
According to Ghana Web, a press statement issued on October 16, 2026, and signed by NUGS president Rashid Ibrahim, described the allegations as deeply concerning. The statement highlighted the responsibility of school authorities to safeguard students rather than subject them to harm.
NUGS has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and relevant investigative bodies to conduct a swift and impartial investigation into the matter. The union also emphasized the need to protect the student involved from any form of intimidation or victimization, while providing necessary counseling and support to maintain her dignity and privacy.
The union has stated that if the investigation confirms the allegations, the headmaster should face prosecution in line with Ghanaian law. NUGS asserted that no individual should be above the law due to their position, and that criminal conduct should be met with prosecution rather than mere administrative sanctions.
The GES has already placed the headmaster on interdiction pending the outcome of the investigations. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has also called for the police to investigate the allegations.
Beyond this specific incident, NUGS highlighted a broader issue of sexual harassment and abuse of power affecting female students in high schools and tertiary institutions. The union called for improved reporting mechanisms and assured students they could report misconduct without fear of retaliation.
NUGS expressed solidarity with the affected student and others who have faced similar issues, stressing the importance of safe and respectful educational environments.
