Keta: Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathisers in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have called on party leadership to iron out internal differences ahead of the 2028 general election. The appeal comes after the party's recent flagbearer primary, which saw Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge victorious with 56.48 percent of the votes, defeating four other aspirants including Mr Kennedy Agyapong.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Kwami Doe-Dala, a party supporter, emphasized the need for unity and discipline to be reinstated within the party as the 2028 general election approaches. He noted that some aspirants and their supporters, after losing the internal primary, may harbor bitterness, and stressed the importance of unity prevailing once collective decisions are made.
Mr Doe-Dala also pointed out that past electoral setbacks for the party were due to internal divisions. He warned that ongoing infighting could jeopardize the party's chances in the 2028 elections and appealed to the party's Council of Elders to resolve these differences. He urged members to rally behind Dr Bawumia to work towards a united front, enabling the NPP to restructure and be in a better position for the upcoming general elections.
Additionally, Mr Dela-Doe expressed concern about the divisions within the party's leadership and highlighted the need to resolve disagreements that could undermine the party's efforts to consolidate support. Mr George Wedanu, another supporter, noted that while concerns remain, grassroots supporters are hopeful and optimistic about party unity. He urged that lingering tensions among senior campaign actors be addressed to position the party for victory in 2028.
Mr Wedanu stated that Dr Bawumia's victory is seen as a mandate for him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections. He emphasized that unity alone is not enough to guarantee victory and stressed the need for the party to develop a convincing policy, reconnect with ordinary Ghanaians, and regain public trust.
He further appealed to the national executives of the NPP to initiate internal reforms aimed at repositioning the party for 2028, including the establishment of a policy secretariat to enhance policy development. As preparations for the 2028 elections begin, many party supporters are calling for internal balance and cohesion, with a compelling message that resonates with Ghanaian voters.
Supporters believe that the outcome of the 2028 general election will depend on the party's ability to unite and present a credible alternative to the current administration. They emphasized that the journey to 2028 starts now, and the party must prioritize unity, discipline, and focus. They called on supporters and flagbearer aspirants to pledge their support and demonstrate their commitment to these values of the party.
