NPP Opposes Emelia Agbenyo’s Appointment as EC Deputy Chairperson

Baku:The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed its rejection of Emelia Afi Agbenyo's appointment as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC). The party considers her appointment unacceptable due to her previous political activities and alleged ties with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Ghana Web, the NPP highlighted that Agbenyo served as its governance sector spokesperson during the preparation of the 2024 manifesto. The party also alleged that she subsequently engaged in activities supporting the NDC, including participating in campaign rallies and wearing NDC campaign attire.

The NPP has raised concerns over Agbenyo's appointment to a senior EC position less than two years before the 2028 general elections. The party also accused President John Dramani Mahama of inconsistency, recalling his earlier criticism of political appointments to the EC when he was in opposition. The NPP urged President Mahama to retract Agbenyo's appointment and sought clarification from the Council of State regarding their advice on the matter.

Furthermore, the NPP called for reforms in the appointment process of EC members as part of the constitutional review and vowed to use all lawful means to safeguard the integrity of Ghana's electoral system. The party appealed for support from civil society organizations, religious bodies, the media, and the public in its stance.
