Accra: Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has characterized Ghana's decision to grant the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a two-thirds majority in Parliament during the 2024 general elections as the nation's most significant electoral error. Awuku expressed concerns that this substantial majority undermines essential checks and balances, thereby weakening parliamentary oversight of President John Dramani Mahama's administration.
According to Ghana Web, Awuku, speaking to the media in Parliament and shared online on July 30, 2026, argued that such a super-majority emboldens the government to operate with reduced accountability. He highlighted instances where bills, particularly those seeking approval for loans, were presented in Parliament without clear details on repayment terms, attributing this to the NDC's overwhelming control.
Awuku emphasized that he would not wish for a similar level of legislative dominance for his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that concentrated power in Parliament is undesirable regardless of which party holds it. He further warned that such dominance risks eroding constitutional safeguards, cautioning against granting any party a two-thirds majority that could potentially undermine the constitution's spirit and letter.
