Accra: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has humorously cautioned Alhaji Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed during his inauguration as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Minority playfully advised Baba Jamal to be wary of his own Majority National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament. First Deputy Minority Chief Whip Habib Iddrisu conveyed the Caucus' congratulatory message on the floor of Parliament, alleging that members of the Majority Caucus had signed a petition to express no confidence in Baba Jamal's victory in the recently held by-election. "The Majority Caucus are not your friend; they denied you. We, the Minority, are your friends, and we welcome you to this Chamber," stated Mr. Iddrisu, who is also the NPP MP for Tolon.
He further commented on the political dynamics, mentioning that the President had dismissed Baba Jamal as High Commissioner before his election and suggested that within the NDC, Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia was his only ally. Mr. Iddrisu also pointed out that the by-election results indicated a decline in the ruling NDC's popularity, noting a decrease in votes from 22,000 in the 2024 elections to 10,884 in under two years.
In response, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central, refuted the Minority's assertions and extended a warm welcome to Baba Jamal. He emphasized that Baba Jamal's legal expertise would enhance the Majority's capabilities in the Legislative House.
Earlier, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin had officially sworn Baba Jamal into office following his victory in the Ayawaso East by-election held on March 3, 2026, where he garnered 10,884 votes to surpass four other candidates.
