Sunyani: Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) preparing for the party's Election 2028 Presidential Primary have been urged to look beyond the Saturday January 31 elections. Mr. Shadrach Abrefa-Mensa, a former Bono Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the NPP, emphasized that the more significant challenge lies in the 2028 General Election.
According to Ghana News Agency, the NPP has scheduled January 31, 2026, for its presidential primary to select a flagbearer for the upcoming Election 2028. The contenders for the position include former Vice President Alhaji Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former MP and former Minister of Education, and Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, former General Secretary of the NPP.
In an interview in Sunyani, Mr. Abrefa-Mensa highlighted that the presidential primary is merely the beginning of a larger political challenge. He stressed that the early election of a flagbearer is a strategic move, allowing the party ample time to prepare for the Election 2028. He urged party members to unite and strengthen their resolve.
Mr. Abrefa-Mensa further advised that the party must initiate its rebuilding process immediately to position itself for success in 2028. Following the presidential primary, the NPP plans to elect polling station, constituency, regional, and national executives, along with parliamentary candidates for Election 2028.
Expressing optimism, Mr. Abrefa-Mensa stated that if the party successfully navigates these processes peacefully, victory in the 2028 elections is achievable. He called on party members to be mindful of their public statements. He also praised the party's leadership for maintaining discipline within the organization.
