Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association [GFA] has reiterated that there is nothing wrong with Asante Kotokousing the images of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in their jerseys in their upcoming season.
The Ghana Premier League champions have unveiled their new home and away kits for the upcoming 2022–2023 season.
The image of His Royal Majesty, Otumfour Osei Tutu II – who is the owner of the club is printed on both the club’s home and away jerseys.
The jerseys have caused a stir in the media space with several questioning the decision of the management.
However, Oduro Sarfo has stated Kotoko is free to use the jerseys in all local competitions in Ghana but revealed that they will not be allowed to use them in the CAF inter-club championships as that will require negotiations with the continent’s top football governing body, CAF.
“There’s no law in Ghana that prohibits Kotoko from using Asanteman’s image on their jersey to play the Ghana Premier League,” he told Kumasi-based Abusua FM.
“However CAF have exclusive marketing and commercial rights on all their competitions. Therefore, Kotoko must negotiate with them before they can use the same jersey to play in the Champions League.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of the club, Nana Yaw Amponsah has been asked to appear at the Manhyia Palace to explain his decision to use the image of Otumfuo according to reports.
Asante Kotoko will represent Ghana in the Caf Champions League after winning the Ghana Premier League last season.
