Accra: Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reassured Ghanaians in South Africa that all who wish to return home will be included in the upcoming evacuation exercise. This assurance comes after clarifications regarding a chartered flight were made.
According to Ghana Web, the Foreign Affairs Minister shared in a Facebook post that Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, played a crucial role in locating Sylvester Boakye, a Ghanaian who missed an updated evacuation notice. Boakye was the only individual who went to O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, May 21. Despite missing the notice, Boakye will be included in the larger evacuation plan aimed at assisting about 800 Ghanaians in returning home.
Ablakwa addressed false reports suggesting that Boakye had already been flown back to Ghana, emphasizing that this information was incorrect. He clarified that no chartered flight had been sent from Ghana, and the evacuation plan was postponed due to an agreement with South African authorities to resolve legal and technical challenges.
The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure the evacuation is efficiently organized, affirming, "Truth stands; and truth always wins."
