Accra, Ghana: The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Ghana has refuted claims reported in some media outlets that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is on the verge of collapse. The NHIA emphasized the financial stability of the Scheme and its ongoing commitment to providing quality healthcare services to Ghanaians.

According to Ghana News Agency, the NHIA responded to a story attributed to Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II. This report had suggested that the NHIS was facing challenges due to the government’s failure to allocate full revenue from the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) to the Scheme. The NHIA clarified that while it recognizes the need for adequate government funding, it disapproved of the media narrative that portrayed the NHIS as nearing collapse.

Furthermore, the Authority urged the media to report responsibly on matters concerning the NHIS, to maintain public trust in the system. It reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the government for ensuring sufficient NHIL funding to meet the healthcare needs of Ghanaians. The NHIA also highlighted its consistent performance in paying claims to healthcare facilities, noting an average of GHS150 million every 30 days, especially in the past two years.
