Next NDC gov’t must prioritise effectiveness of traditional rulers’ authority – Dr. Duffuor

Former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has proposed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to ensure its next government sees to it that the authority of traditional rulers becomes effective.

In his latest article, the successful businesses man has charged the opposition party to include this in its manifesto for the 2024 general elections.

“I, therefore, propose to the NDC that the restoration of the authority and responsibility of our chiefs should have top priority in a future NDC government, and this should be clearly encapsulated in the manifesto we will be putting before the people at the next election,” Dr. Kwabena Duffuor notes in his article.

The former Governor of the Bank of Ghana also wants the next NDC government to prioritise strengthening relationships with chiefs and resource them to be able to cater to their people.

“The next NDC government should enter into a renewed partnership with our nation’s chiefs and give them a fraction of all revenue generated from their communities, so they have the opportunity to care for their people, community institutions, and infrastructure while also being answerable to the state government.

“Giving our chiefs back their status as well as sustainable income for the development of their local communities and its institutions would incentivize them to make sure that their communities prosper, as the community’s success is their own success and vice versa,” Dr. Duffuor adds in his article.

The leading member of the largest opposition party in the country is one of the few people that could rival ex-President John Dramani Mahama for the flagbearer slot of the NDC before the 2024 general elections.

In the past, he has stressed that he would be honoured when given the nod by the party to be the candidate for the next elections.
