Accra: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially scheduled February 7, 2026, for its parliamentary primary aimed at selecting a candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election. This decision comes in light of the forthcoming by-election, set for March 3, 2026, necessitated by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
According to Ghana Web, a statement released by the NDC and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey detailed the procedures for nominations, filing, vetting, and the conduct of the primary. The statement emphasized the importance of respecting the established timelines and maintaining decency, unity, and fairness throughout the election process.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced the March 3 by-election date, adhering to Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the filling of vacant parliamentary seats within a stipulated period. The NDC's statement further specified the costs associated with the nomination process, with forms priced at GHS5,000 and a filing fee set at GHS40,000. Notably, aspirants and Persons with Disabilities will benefit from a 50 percent concession on these fees.
Additionally, the NDC outlined that all payments related to the nomination process must be deposited directly into the party's designated UMB account at the Adabraka branch, explicitly stating that cheques or bankers' drafts will not be accepted. Aspirants will receive a certified copy of the delegates' list upon verification of the filing fee payment, ensuring transparency and preparedness for the upcoming primary.
