NDC MP Urges Doctors to Resign if Overwhelmed, Citing Ghana’s Resilience

Accra: The Chairman of Parliament's Health Committee, Mark Kurt Nawaane, has delivered a strong message to medical professionals struggling with the pressures of their job: "if you can no longer cope, it's time to step aside." His comments come after a parliamentary probe into the death of engineer Charles Amissah, a case that has triggered fresh outrage over standards of emergency care in Ghana. According to Ghana Web, Nawaane emphasized that medical professionals who find themselves overwhelmed should consider resigning, asserting that Ghana's healthcare system will endure without them. He stressed the importance of ethical commitment and professionalism in maintaining the standards of healthcare. Nawaane's remarks followed the presentation of a report by a three-member investigative committee, chaired by Agyeman Badu Akosah, to the parliamentary committee. This report recommended disciplinary action against several health workers for alleged breaches of professional duty in handling Amissah's medical emer gency. Nawaane, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Nabdam on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, commended the investigative team for their transparency, particularly in naming individuals involved in the case. He noted the significance of holding individuals accountable, contrasting this approach with past investigations that predominantly blamed health facilities. The committee chair further reminded doctors of their professional responsibilities, urging them to adhere to ethical standards and seek assistance from colleagues when faced with challenges. He emphasized that the recommendations from the committee are expected to guide further actions by the relevant health authorities, reinforcing the call for accountability and professional ethics in the medical field.
