Accra: The Deputy Women's Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abigail Elorm Mensah, has criticized Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin for allegedly describing Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah as a 'nobody' during the presentation of a petition at the Presidency. This incident occurred following the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) 'Democracy Under Attack' demonstration.
According to Ghana Web, Elorm Mensah expressed her disapproval of the comments in a Facebook post dated August 7, 2026. She stated that the remarks were not only an affront to Nana Yaa Jantuah but also a slight against women who contribute to governance and public service in Ghana. By describing Jantuah in such terms, Mensah argued that it demonstrated a 'clear sense of gender superiority' and questioned whether it implied that women are not competent enough for key public positions.
Elorm Mensah emphasized that Jantuah, a senior government official, deserves the same respect as any other public official. She found it troubling that the Minority Leader's comments suggested that a woman might be unfit to receive a petition solely based on gender. Mensah articulated that this attitude undermines the principles of merit, professionalism, and equality that should be upheld in the nation.
The NDC Deputy Women's Organiser also called on the NPP to clarify its position on gender equality and demanded an immediate apology from the Minority Leader to Nana Yaa Jantuah and Ghanaian women. She urged the NPP leadership to distance itself from such discriminatory remarks and reaffirmed her dedication to advocating for women's dignity, inclusion, and participation in governance.
