ACCRA: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed strong disapproval of the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision to disqualify Joana Gyan Cudjoe, its parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, labeling the move as a "travesty of justice." According to Ghana News Agency, the NDC has challenged the EC's decision, arguing that the disqualification of Cudjoe was influenced by partisanship and lacked solid legal foundation. During a press conference in Accra, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC, criticized the EC's action, describing it as "legally baseless." The disqualification was officially communicated in a letter dated October 10, 2024, from Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC. The letter cited a pending court case challenging Cudjoe's eligibility to run on the NDC ticket for the 2024 general elections as the reason for her disqualification. In response, the NDC has filed an injunction application to halt the EC from printing parliamentary ballot papers and notice s of poll for the Amenfi Central constituency. Kwetey argued that despite the expiry of the injunction, the EC proceeded to disqualify Cudjoe, which he claims infringes on the party's rights. Kwetey further questioned the legal grounds of the EC's decision, suggesting that partisanship was a motive behind the disqualification. He stated that the EC's actions are not only "legally unsound" but also pose a threat to the nation's democratic principles. The NDC has demanded an explanation from the EC, criticizing the decision as a "blatant miscarriage of justice."
