Accra: A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Awo Kekeli, has raised concerns about the suitability of Baba Jamal, Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria, for his diplomatic position. She describes Baba Jamal as a grassroots politician rather than a career diplomat.
According to Ghana Web, Awo Kekeli clarified that her concerns are not personal but stem from Baba Jamal's political temperament and strong attachment to party grassroots activities. Speaking during an interview on GHOne TV, she noted that Baba Jamal's preference for active political engagements might not align with the nature of diplomatic work. She explained, "It's not like I have issues with his appointment, but I feel he's not cut out for diplomacy. He's a grassroots person, someone who feels more connected to the people."
Awo Kekeli elaborated on the challenges of diplomatic postings, particularly in a strategic country like Nigeria, which she described as potentially isolating for someone accustomed to constant political interactions. "Diplomacy can be lonely. You're there by yourself, seeing just a few people a day. He has always been very active in politics, so maybe he's not too comfortable with that kind of environment," she added.
Her comments surfaced amid Baba Jamal's decision to contest the NDC parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East, following the death of the constituency's Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama. Baba Jamal has announced a 10-day leave from his High Commissioner role to focus on the primary, dismissing calls for his resignation. He emphasized that his political ambitions do not conflict with his diplomatic duties and stated he would step down only if he wins the parliamentary contest. Baba Jamal also appealed to delegates to consider his experience and ability to foster development in the constituency.
Meanwhile, five other aspirants, besides Baba Jamal, have picked nomination forms to contest the NDC primary in Ayawaso East. These include the party's constituency chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late MP; Dr. Yakubu Azindow; Najib Mohammed Sani; and Salam Daru.
Despite the internal contest, Awo Kekeli expressed confidence in the NDC's ability to retain the seat, citing Ayawaso East as a traditional stronghold of the party. She urged party members to remain united and avoid actions that could dishonor the legacy of the late MP. "Fourth-time MPs don't come easy. He worked hard for his people. We should not muddy things or disturb his peace in the grave. Let his soul rest, knowing the constituency is in safe hands," she said.
