Accra: The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that individuals holding positions within the government are prohibited from simultaneously serving in executive roles within the party. Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, outlined the new directive, emphasizing that government appointees aspiring for party positions must first resign from their governmental roles.
According to Ghana Web, this new measure, instituted by the National Executive Committee of the party, requires that any government appointee seeking a party position must resign at least six months before submitting their nomination forms. Exceptions to this rule include chairpersons and board members, as they are not considered full-time employees.
Kwetey clarified that the directive specifically targets ministers, deputy ministers, chief executive officers and their deputies, as well as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives. The initiative aims to ensure that those holding party offices can dedicate their attention fully to their roles, particularly in preparation for the upcoming 2028 general election.
Furthermore, Kwetey emphasized the importance of transparency in party operations, urging branch executives to conduct meetings and elections at publicly announced venues and times. This move seeks to address issues such as intimidation and other improper tactics often associated with political gatherings.
The outlined election schedule indicates that the party's internal elections will commence with branch primaries between January 2026 and May 2026. Following this, constituency elections will take place from September 2026 to August 2027, regional executive elections between October and November 2026, and the national executive election in December 2026.
