Tamale: Mr Mahama Abdul-Fataw, Tamale Metropolitan Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on students to actively participate in combating corruption and poor governance in the country. He emphasized the role of students as future leaders in promoting integrity, accountability, and transparency within educational institutions and their communities.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Abdul-Fataw addressed these points during a forum organized by the Tamale Metropolitan Directorate of the NCCE under the 'Strengthening the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption in Ghana' project. The event, supported by the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the European Union, was attended by students and teachers at the Business Senior High School in Tamale.
Mr Abdul-Fataw urged students to become ambassadors for good governance and ethical behavior, highlighting corruption as a significant obstacle to the country's development. He encouraged them to report any suspected corruption cases to the relevant authorities for appropriate action. He mentioned that institutions like the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Police, and other anti-corruption bodies offer protection and support to citizens who report corrupt practices.
Mr Azumbawini Salifu Eliasu, a tutor at the Business Senior High School, praised the NCCE for organizing the engagement. He stressed that the fight against corruption and the promotion of responsible governance should start at the school level by instilling discipline, honesty, and civic responsibility in students. He noted that educating students on corruption issues would help shape them into responsible citizens capable of contributing positively to national development.
Mohammed Salamatu, a student participant, expressed that the engagement had enlightened her on the importance of reporting suspected corrupt activities within communities. She added that she now felt confident to speak out against wrongdoing, knowing that the State supports citizens who expose corruption through the whistleblower act.
