NAIMOS Targets Illegal Mining on Tano River with Destruction of 92 Machines

Asemkrom:The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has dismantled 92 changfang machines in operations conducted on the Tano River in the Aowin District's Western North Region. These actions were part of Operation WATER SHIELD, a campaign aimed at protecting Ghana's water bodies from illegal mining activities.

According to Ghana Web, NAIMOS carried out two operations on October 15 and October 18, 2026. During the first operation, the Task Force identified extensive illegal in-stream mining activities near the Jema-Asekrom Forest Reserve. This led to the destruction of 61 changfang machines, the recovery of six water pumps and a generator, and the arrest of three suspected operators who were handed over to the police.

Despite these efforts, subsequent patrols on October 18 found that illegal mining had resumed on the river. NAIMOS personnel then destroyed an additional 31 changfang machines and seized two outboard motors.

NAIMOS reported that these operations have significantly impacted the illegal mining capacity along the Tano River. However, the return of miners highlights the need for continuous monitoring and enforcement. The Secretariat emphasized its commitment to sustained patrols and community engagement to combat illegal mining activities.

The Secretariat also expressed concerns over the severe pollution and environmental degradation caused by ongoing mining, which threatens the surrounding forest reserve and local communities relying on the river. NAIMOS plans to maintain pressure on illegal mining along the Tano River and other affected areas, reinforcing its dedication to protecting Ghana's water resources and environment.
