Koforidua:The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Eastern Regional Secretariat, has called on residents to actively engage in disaster prevention measures. These include keeping drains clean, steering clear of waterways and flood-prone areas, adhering to fire safety protocols, and paying attention to weather alerts to mitigate disaster risks.
According to Ghana News Agency, the appeal is part of the events for the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, celebrated under the theme 'Resilience Starts at Home.' In a press statement, Mr. Emmanuel Konja Tullah, Deputy Eastern Regional Director of NADMO in charge of Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, emphasized that disaster prevention is a collective responsibility that must start within homes and communities.
Mr. Tullah highlighted that the theme aligns with NADMO's motto, 'Prevention Pays,' pointing out that taking proactive measures can save lives, protect property, and reduce the impact of disasters. He urged households to develop emergency plans and report potential hazards to the relevant authorities without delay.
Furthermore, Mr. Tullah encouraged Municipal and District Assemblies, traditional authorities, community leaders, the media, and other stakeholders to enhance public education and promote responsible environmental practices. He noted that disasters have far-reaching effects, including disrupting livelihoods and affecting the socio-economic well-being of communities.
He underlined the necessity of collective responsibility and investment in building resilience, stating that retooling NADMO to effectively manage disaster mitigation is not merely a favor to the organization, but a crucial responsibility to the communities it serves. The Eastern Regional Secretariat remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders to boost disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and community resilience throughout the region.
