Accra: Adamu Mohammed, the Techiman North District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), has issued a warning to farmers in the district to avoid cultivating near water bodies. He raised concerns over the pollution and degradation of local water sources, such as the Addaisu and Subin rivers, due to farming activities and other harmful human practices.
According to Ghana Web, Mohammed, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Aworano, a farming community within the district, highlighted the risks posed by agrochemicals used by farmers. These chemicals are being washed into the rivers, contaminating the water and posing significant environmental threats. Mohammed led a team of NaDMO personnel, officials from the Department of Agriculture, and traditional leaders to assess the pollution levels of the Addaisu and Subin rivers at Aworano.
He emphasized the need for urgent measures to protect these water bodies, pointing out that farming activities along riverbanks are major contributors to the declining water quality. Mohammed urged farmers to stop cultivating near the rivers and to adopt environmentally friendly farming practices to preserve the district's water resources.
Mohammed also noted that NaDMO has intensified efforts to safeguard rivers, streams, and other water bodies within the district. He called upon traditional authorities and community members to support these initiatives. Additionally, he advised residents to protect the environment by avoiding activities that could damage natural resources and impact future generations negatively.
