Bolgatanga: The MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned and handed over a newly constructed Accident and Emergency (A and E) Block valued at over GHS15 million to the Ho Teaching Hospital to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery in the Volta Region and beyond.
According to Ghana News Agency, the ceremony was attended by Madam Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, who emphasized the project as a testament to MTN's dedication to enhancing lives through strategic investments in health, education, and economic empowerment. Madam Wiafe highlighted the critical role of emergency care as the 'front door' of every hospital, underscoring the importance of timely and effective response in critical situations to save lives.
She further explained that the new A and E Centre, constructed to international standards, aims to alleviate congestion, improve patient flow, and enhance referral capacity across the Region. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge medical equipment to enable health professionals to effectively manage life-threatening situations. She reiterated MTN's commitment, stating that while the investment exceeds GHS15 million, its real value lies in the lives it will save.
Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, expressed his gratitude to the MTN Ghana Foundation, recognizing the intervention as a significant act of corporate philanthropy. He connected the facility to the government's broader health sector reforms, as outlined in the President's recent State of the Nation Address, which stressed health sovereignty and strategic investments in infrastructure and services.
Dr Delanyo Tsidi Dovlo, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Ho Teaching Hospital, described the project as a substantial enhancement to the hospital's vision of becoming a center of excellence in healthcare delivery. He acknowledged the critical role of emergency care in evaluating the strength of a health system and committed the Board to manage the facility efficiently for quality services.
Dr Hintermann Mbroh, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, expressed appreciation for the expansion, noting its significant impact on the hospital's ability to handle trauma and critical cases. He emphasized integrating modern infrastructure with a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and compassion to deliver true quality care.
Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), praised the initiative for its importance to specialist training and clinical education. She called for further investment in specialized facilities to support the teaching hospital's mandate and reduce referrals to Accra.
The MTN Ghana Foundation has completed over 55 health projects nationwide over the past three decades, including intensive care units, maternity blocks, emergency centers, and medical equipment. The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, hospital management, staff, and other stakeholders.
