Accra: The Minority in Parliament has issued a warning to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to resist any influences from within his party that may lead him to consider a third term in office. The group highlighted the significance of resisting such pressures, which they described as a potential 'temptation'.
According to Ghana Web, the warning was delivered during a press briefing led by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin. He noted that while President Mahama has publicly expressed his disinterest in pursuing a third term, there are reportedly many within his party advocating for it. Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for the President to reiterate his stance on this issue directly to the citizens of Ghana.
Afenyo-Markin also stated that the Minority would firmly oppose any attempts to push a third-term agenda for President Mahama. He urged the President to make his position clear once more, as previous statements might not have reached all citizens. The Minority stressed the importance of the President publicly reaffirming his non-interest in a third term to avoid any misunderstanding or undue pressure from party members.
The caution from the Minority comes amidst growing calls for another term for President Mahama after his current tenure. However, these calls have been refuted by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications. On December 10, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu dismissed such claims, stating that President Mahama had already made his position clear on not seeking a third term.
