Minority Demands Transparency on GH?73 Billion Sole Sourcing Road Contracts

Accra: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to publish the names and scope of work of 81 out of 107 road contracts awarded under sole sourcing as part of the Big Push infrastructure programme, which amounts to GH?73 billion (US$6.89 billion).

According to Ghana News Agency, addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra on Tuesday, Mr. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, NPP Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru and Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee, stated that the Minority was not opposed to the Big Push initiative. However, he expressed concern over partisan considerations in awarding contracts within the past seven months.

Mr. Osei Nyarko highlighted that the Minority was particularly troubled by the abandonment of over 1,000 ongoing road projects, which had reached between 57 and 93 per cent completion as of December 31, 2024. He alleged that nearly 80 per cent of these projects were left unattended following the assumption of office by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2025.

He emphasized that the Minority would continue to exercise oversight to ensure fiscal discipline, transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the use of taxpayers' funds for road infrastructure. Other pertinent issues raised by the Minority included the need for the operationalisation of the National Road Authority Secretariat and reimbursing the National Road Fund, delays in the Suame three-tier interchange, and the lack of transparency in the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.

Additional concerns were the Drip Programme, setbacks in the railway sector, the Boankra inland port project, and the implementation of the Shippers Act and shipping surcharges. The Minority reiterated its commitment to demand openness in the government's infrastructure drive, insisting that road projects must serve national interest rather than partisan priorities.
