Minority Chief Whip Urges Majority to Ensure Attendance in Parliament

Accra: The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has issued a caution to the Majority Caucus in Parliament to take their responsibilities seriously after failing to gather enough members during a sitting on Thursday, February 5, 2026. He emphasized that the Minority would no longer 'treat the Majority with kid's gloves' if this issue continues. According to Ghana Web, Annoh-Dompreh raised concerns on the floor of Parliament, noting that the Minority had chosen not to invoke Standing Order 64 and Article 102 of the Constitution, despite having sufficient numbers present in the Chamber. By 1:30 pm, most Minority members were seated, while the Majority front bench was mostly empty, with only the Member for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, Cassiel Ato Forson-sorry, actually Adongo-present at the time. Annoh-Dompreh criticized the Majority's absence during important sittings and questioned their commitment to their mandate from Ghanaians. He pointed out that with a 'whopping majority of 189 Members,' the governing side could not afford such lapses. He also mentioned that the Speaker of Parliament, being experienced, should not need prompting to enforce rules when the House is improperly constituted. The Minority Chief Whip also expressed that while the Minority was open to withdrawing its application for the sake of stability, public scrutiny of Parliament's actions continues. He criticized the Majority for attending sessions at their convenience, leaving the Chamber empty during critical business, and questioned the message this behavior sends to the Ghanaian populace. Annoh-Dompreh offered 'free counsel' to the Majority, advising them to effectively marshal their numbers in future sessions. He warned that the Minority would no longer be lenient and insisted that the Majority should fulfill their duties as a supermajority by ensuring attendance. He also speculated whether internal political ambitions, including presidential aspirations, were affecting attendance and urged that these distractions should not undermine parl iamentary responsibility.
