Accra:The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a warning to media outlets affiliated with political and religious groups, threatening their closure as part of efforts to address the proliferation of broadcast stations in Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, George expressed concern over the sheer number of media outlets in the country, citing the existence of nearly 700 radio stations and 120 television stations for a population of about 35 million. He highlighted this issue during his keynote address at AVAS 2026 on November 2, 2026, suggesting the large number of broadcasters poses challenges for effective media regulation.
The minister argued for the need to reduce the number of media outlets, stating, "If you leave me, I will shut down every political and religiously affiliated media house so that we have a clean slate in this country." He dismissed the notion that the current situation is a reflection of media freedom, warning instead of potential "media tyranny."
George also addressed the issue of religious organizations owning broadcast stations, pointing out that existing regulations prohibit such ownership. However, he alleged that some groups circumvent these rules by using other entities to apply for licenses from the National Communications Authority.
