Accra: Media personality MC Yaa Yeboah has expressed criticism towards the Ghanaian government's decision to reject a GHS20 million offer from South African telecommunications company MTN. The funds were intended to aid Ghanaians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
According to Ghana Web, MC Yaa Yeboah voiced her opinion during a discussion on United Showbiz, which gained attention online on August 31, 2026. She argued that MTN should return the money to South Africa, suggesting that the funds are more needed there than in Ghana. Yeboah highlighted that by rejecting the offer, the Ghanaian government is sending a message to South Africans, asserting that accepting the money would not resolve the ongoing issues of xenophobia.
MC Yaa Yeboah further criticized MTN's strategy, stating that the company made an error by announcing its GHS20 million offer publicly after the government's private rejection. She indicated that MTN Ghana's Board Chair and CEO, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, possibly had an ulterior motive in publicizing the offer, despite being aware of the government's reasons for declining it. Yeboah questioned the impact of the monetary amount on resolving the challenges faced by Ghanaians, pointing out that the equivalent of $1.7 million would have limited efficacy in addressing the broader issue of xenophobia.
