Accra: The National Third Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawud Osman, has raised concerns over a Circuit Court judge's decision to remand the party's Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye, after he had already spent two weeks in BNI custody. Speaking to journalists at the court premises, Osman emphasized that every Ghanaian has a constitutional right to bail unless proven guilty by a competent court.
According to Ghana Web, Osman, who is not a lawyer by profession, stressed the importance of protecting accused persons' rights under the law. He stated that the Constitution of Ghana grants every citizen the right to bail, a principle that even a first-year law student would understand. Osman argued that no accused person should be considered guilty until a court delivers a judgment.
Osman criticized the judge's decision to remand Abronye despite the case's pending determination. He questioned whether the judge acted independently or under external influence, suggesting that the explanation for the remand was unacceptable. The judge reportedly cited concerns that Abronye would continue his alleged activities if granted bail.
Abronye's detention stems from allegations of spreading false news, leading to his remand into BNI custody by Circuit Court 9 in Accra. The NPP has since filed a motion challenging the court's decision. The party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, described the transfer of the bail application from Criminal Court Two to General Jurisdiction Two as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the process.
The hearing on the bail application has been adjourned to Thursday, May 21, 2026, after the prosecution requested additional time to review the motion.
