Marketing Ghana’s Gold: Armah Kofi Buah Engages Hong Kong Business Community

Hong kong: The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has embarked on a strategic mission to position Ghana as a premier destination for mining investment in Africa, starting with a crucial visit to Hong Kong. During his visit, Buah engaged with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance of Hong Kong, private sector investors, and the leadership of the Hong Kong Gold Exchange.

According to Ghana Web, the Minister outlined the primary focus of President John Dramani Mahama's administration in managing Ghana's natural resources, highlighting gold as a critical component. The Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX), with its distinguished history in the precious metals industry, was emphasized as a valuable learning opportunity for Ghana. Buah stressed the importance of collaboration through exchange programs and capacity building to strengthen ties between Ghana and Hong Kong.

Dr. Haywood Cheung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Gold Exchange, expressed commitment to unlocking the value of gold potential while serving both local and global markets. He noted that Ghana, as Africa's leading gold producer, stands to benefit significantly from the Exchange's expertise and service.

The Hong Kong Gold Exchange, established in 2025 after restructuring from the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society, carries a legacy of over 115 years in natural resource management. The Exchange aims to forge a new working relationship with the Ghanaian government, enhancing Ghana's gold industry's value chain through storage, insurance, and value addition.

Isaac Tandoh, CEO of the Minerals Commission, highlighted Ghana's vast untapped gold resources, emphasizing the need for substantial investment. The Director of Mines, Kwame Ahoma, elaborated on Ghana's robust regulatory frameworks and initiatives like GoldBod and the prudent management of gold reserves, which have contributed to economic stability.

Edward Tsui, Ghana's Consul General in Hong Kong, outlined forthcoming steps, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a reciprocal visit by the Hong Kong Gold Exchange executives. Ambassador Kojo Bonsu, Ghana's Ambassador to China, accompanied Buah during the meetings, highlighting the financial and growth potential of the proposed initiatives.

Dr. Haywood Cheung presented a symbolic gift to Minister Armah-Kofi Buah, marking the beginning of this promising new collaboration. The Hong Kong Gold Exchange, with its 147 exchange shareholder members, provides a comprehensive trading platform for the precious metals industry, with significant growth reflected in its daily trading volumes.
