Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, has shared his concerns about the current state of the film industry relative to the popular video-sharing platform, YouTube.
According to him, the platform, while offering great opportunities, is being misused by actors who prioritize quick gains over quality and sustainability.
In a video posted on his Instagram handle, Kanayo O. Kanayo lamented the trend of one-day shoots that command high fees but compromise the health of actors and the integrity of the content.
“I have sat back and watched the opportunities offered by the YouTube channel, which is a very good platform. But unfortunately… people jump in and try to mess it up.
‘The guys who have besieged YouTube, actors, not the producers, don’t have, in essence, any sense of purpose or process to create a procedure for a lasting videography of creating content,” he submitted.
He recalled the early days of Nollywood, built with care and collaboration, and contrasted it with today’s individualistic approach, w
here actors create their own channels and cease working with other producers.
The actor warned that this practice is not sustainable and could lead to health issues, as many actors in Nigeria lack proper insurance.
‘My very high-standing colleague who started this one-day shoot, go and ask him. Unfortunately, he’s not in good health.
‘I hope you enjoy good health like those of us who started 35, 38 years ago. Because what you’re doing is not sustainable,’ he said.
He urged his colleagues to consider the long-term effects of their actions on both their well-being and the industry’s standards.
‘Most actors, like everything in Nigeria, have created their own channels. They’ve stopped acting for other producers. That’s not a way to build the industry. You need to lend your service to other people. Yes, we’re creating content, but then we all need each other,’ he said.
