Mahama Calls on Corporate Ghana to Support Sports Funding

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has called on corporate Ghana to support the funding of the nation's sporting activities. The President made the call in his address at the maiden Presidential Dialogue with the Private Sector in Accra. According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized the economic significance of sports, highlighting its influence on global markets, tourism, media rights, youth employment, the creative industry, and investment flows. He noted that Ghana is poised to be at the center of several global sporting platforms in 2026, with the national football team, the Black Stars, preparing for its fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, and the women's soccer team, the Black Queens, gearing up for continental competition. The President announced the establishment of the Ghana Sports Fund, a transparent financing framework aimed at grassroots development, school sports, athlete welfare, infrastructure modernization, and long-term talent pathways. He urged Corporate Ghana to view this ini tiative as a partnership in national development rather than charity, emphasizing the government's role in creating the necessary framework for collaboration. President Mahama proposed a covenant between the Government and the Private Sector, stressing the importance of maintaining stable macroeconomic policies and regulatory clarity. He highlighted the government's commitment to improving infrastructure and fostering conditions conducive to private sector growth. In return, the President called on the private sector to invest in domestic production, create jobs, prioritize local content, and engage transparently in policy dialogue with the government. He emphasized the need for tangible actions beyond speeches to build a competitive, resilient, and prosperous industrial Ghana. Concluding his address, President Mahama urged a transition from dialogue to delivery, asserting that the collaborative efforts of the government and private sector would pave the way for an industrialized Ghana.
