Davos: President John Dramani Mahama, on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, announced new members of the Presidential Council for the Accra Reset Initiative.
According to Ghana News Agency, the newly appointed members include President F©lix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, President Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil El-Sisi of Egypt, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President William Sameoi Ruto of Kenya, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. Additional members are President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva of Brazil, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados, and President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia.
The President also revealed a Circle of Guardians, consisting of distinguished former leaders such as Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Malawian President Joyce Banda, Ghanaian President John Kufuor, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and President of Mauritius Ameenah Gurib-Fakim. Other esteemed members of this circle include former Prime Ministers Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway, Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe of Ethiopia, Gordon Brown of the UK, Helen Clark of New Zealand, P.J. Patterson of Jamaica, Romano Prodi of Italy, and former African Union Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
The Accra Reset Initiative, spearheaded by President Mahama, was launched in late 2025 as a significant international effort to reform global governance, particularly focusing on health and development. The initiative aims to transition from aid dependency to health sovereignty and economic self-reliance for nations in the Global Majority. It proposes new frameworks for financing, business, and partnerships, highlighting workable models, shared value, and sovereignty, initially focusing on health as a proof of concept and gradually expanding across other development sectors.
During his address at the Davos Commitment, President Mahama emphasized the importance of a global partnership based on a shared vision and mutual respect. He stated that the Accra Reset was developing a new cooperation architecture that involves Global South countries in co-designing programs with their partners in the global north and shaping investments around their priorities. The initiative envisions creating Prosperity Spheres across regional platforms, where countries coordinate investment, infrastructure, and jobs.
Former Nigerian President Olusengun Obasanjo, who leads the Guardian Circle of the Accra Initiative, expressed their intention to integrate the Accra Initiative into the North-South Dialogue. This integration aims to negotiate critical reforms and concrete projects with development partners in the North to enhance access to health facilities and technology. He remarked, "The future will not be given to the unprepared. It will be negotiated. It will be built. And it will belong to those who prepare, unite, and organize for it."
