London: Scientists have suggested that consuming minimal sugar before the age of two might contribute to better brain health in later years. Recent research examined the effects of the end of sugar rationing in the UK, which led to a significant increase in sugar consumption. The findings indicate that those who were toddlers during sugar rationing experienced a 23% lower risk of developing dementia.

The research explored the "natural experiment" created by the UK's recovery post-World War Two and the cessation of food rationing.
When sugar rationing ended in September 1953, average daily sugar consumption dramatically increased from approximately 41g to 80g. Past studies have linked this rise to subsequent increases in type 2 diabetes and blood pressure. The recent study involved nearly 65,000 participants from the UK BioBank project and was conducted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, focusing on children who grew up during and after sugar rationing.
The researchers proposed that sugar rationing until age two was associated with a 23% lower risk of dementia and a delayed diagnosis by two-and-a-half years. "Our findings suggest that limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health," stated researcher Jiazhen Zheng. However, Zheng emphasized that "further research is needed" to fully understand the potential effects of sugar on brain health.
Rachel Richardson from Cochrane, an independent non-profit organization, acknowledged the findings but cautioned that they do not constitute definitive evidence linking early sugar intake to dementia. One significant challenge is the inability to ascertain the exact sugar consumption of the study's participants, as their sugar intake was inferred based on birth timing relative to sugar rationing.
Richardson also pointed out that the study's relevance to today's young children is limited due to differences in early nutrition practices. Prof Ian Maidment of Aston University described the study as "an interesting idea" that contributes to ongoing discussions but called for more evidence to substantiate the claims. Dr. Sara Rodrigues from Alzheimer's Research UK highlighted the observational nature of the study, noting that while it can identify links between diet and dementia risk, it cannot conclusively prove causation. She emphasized that adopting a healthy, balanced diet remains one of the best strategies for supporting brain health.
