Lightning Strike Claims Lives of 97 Blacknose Sheep in Swiss Alps

Accra: A lightning strike in the Swiss Alps has tragically claimed the lives of 97 Blacknose sheep in the Valais region, with approximately 80 animals managing to survive, as reported by the Keystone-SDA news agency. According to Ghana News Agency, the incident occurred when the animals were gathered closely in a fenced area, a practice that is becoming increasingly necessary for protecting flocks. This change in practice is largely due to the growing wolf population, which poses a significant threat to sheep farmers. The impacted farmer informed Keystone-SDA about the challenges posed by wolves, which have led to the adoption of protective measures that were previously deemed unnecessary. The shocking event was initially reported by the online news site Pomona. Following the lightning strike, the sheep carcasses were airlifted from the mountain by helicopter, as stated by the farmer. The incident took place overnight on an Alpine meadow at the Eggerhorn, which is situated at an altitude of 2,503 meters in the Binn valley, located south of the Rhone River. This unfortunate occurrence followed heavy thunderstorms that swept across significant portions of Switzerland after a prolonged heatwave. The SRF Meteo weather service had already documented 26,000 lightning strikes within just a few hours by Thursday evening. Blacknose sheep are a distinctive Swiss breed, native to the Valais region, and are easily identifiable by their spiral horns, fluffy white fleece, and unique black markings around the eyes, muzzle, and nose. They are highly valued not only for their wool and meat but also for their role in landscape management, as they help maintain short vegetation in steep mountain meadows.
