Accra: The Head of Legal Affairs of the United Party (UP), Andrew Appiah Danquah, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of sending conflicting messages on the LGBTQ+ bill despite allegedly agreeing with its key provisions.
According to Ghana Web, Appiah Danquah expressed his concerns during an appearance on TV3's New Day, highlighting his perplexity over some NPP members appearing to oppose amendments to the bill that purportedly have broad political support. 'I find it very weird that the NPP will give Ghanaians the impression that they are against these amendments,' he said.
He emphasized that the discourse surrounding the LGBTQ+ bill should move beyond partisan politics, given the shared opinions among various political factions on the issue. 'When it comes to LGBTQ+, we seem to have a common position. Why turn something that ought not to be partisan into a partisan battle?' he asked.
Appiah Danquah argued that political controversy over the bill is counterproductive and could erode public trust. 'If your members agree with it and you create the impression that you disagree, then you open yourself up to questions about your credibility,' he stated.
He urged political parties to engage in constructive roles irrespective of their position in government, and to concentrate on shared issues instead of creating unnecessary divisions. 'The focus should be on helping Ghana, not creating noise for political advantage,' he added.
