Accra: A leaked document has emerged, shedding light on questionable practices at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat during the tenure of Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, who was the Registrar of Scholarships and is currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South. The document, which has gained significant attention, indicates that the Secretariat exceeded its remit by granting a scholarship to a 16-year-old student to attend a high school in the United Kingdom.
According to Ghana Web, the document, signed by Dr. Agyemang, reveals that the Ghanaian government funded the student's education at a London-based high school, with the scholarship covering two academic years beginning in 2022. The financial commitment amounted to £27,900 per year in tuition fees, totaling £56,000 over the duration of the scholarship.
The leaked document also disclosed the passport details of the scholarship recipient, identifying her as a female born on September 20, 2006. These revelations have sparked a debate over the legitimacy of the scholarship allocation, as the Secretariat's mandate typically does not extend to funding high school education abroad.
Ghana's High Commission to the United Kingdom shared the documents, with Sabah Zita Benson, the individual responsible for publicizing them, expressing hope for accountability in the matter. Benson condemned the scholarship award as illegal, emphasizing that it was intended to prepare the student for college, which falls outside the Secretariat's established responsibilities. She stated, "This particular scholarship was given to a 16-year-old to attend a private school (high school level) that will prepare her for a good college, which is outside the mandate of the Scholarship Secretariat. ... Eventually, we shall clear the mess but I do hope someone is accountable soon."
