Accra:Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has refuted allegations that the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) search for parliamentary candidates is tailored to protect MPs loyal to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The claims suggest that the process favors those who supported Bawumia during the party's presidential primaries.
According to Ghana Web, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, speaking on Oyerepa TV, labeled the allegations as 'completely false.' He emphasized that the objective of the candidate search is to find viable candidates who can enhance the party's prospects in the general elections.
He clarified that the party's research is focused on identifying candidates who are popular with their constituents and capable of winning elections. This approach is intended to avoid decisions based solely on personal interests or material incentives.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further explained that some candidates may have the support of their constituents but struggle in general elections because they fail to maintain consistent engagement with the people they represent. He criticized politicians who only become visible as elections approach, relying on distributing items to gain support rather than fostering genuine relationships with their constituents.
The candidate search aims to find individuals who can maintain public support and contribute to the NPP's electoral success.
