Kwesi Pratt Jnr Calls for Reform in Electoral Commission Appointments

Baku:Kwesi Pratt Jnr, a prominent journalist, has called for changes to remove presidential influence from the appointment process of Electoral Commission (EC) officials, suggesting that the current system leads to unnecessary political controversy.

According to Ghana Web, Pratt expressed his views during an appearance on Peace FM's morning show, Kokrokoo, where he emphasized the need for a mechanism to prevent the President from appointing the EC Chairperson and deputies.

He criticized President John Dramani Mahama's decision to appoint Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy EC Chairperson, raising concerns about the political implications and the perception it creates. Pratt questioned the necessity of appointing someone who has been involved with the party and its manifesto, given Ghana's population of 35 million, implying that there should be other qualified candidates.

While acknowledging Agbenyo's potential to perform her duties effectively, Pratt maintained that the optics of her appointment are problematic.
