Accra: Former Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, has denied any involvement in bribery allegations linked to the case involving former investment banker Asante Kwaku Berko in the United States.
According to Ghana Web, legal counsel for Dr Donkor, KT Hammond, stated in a release dated Monday, August 10, 2026, that their client was unaware of any request or demand for money in connection with negotiations between the government and ASKA Energy. The lawyers emphasized that Dr Donkor unequivocally disclaims any knowledge of the allegations tied to him, asserting that he neither requested nor demanded any money.
The statement also acknowledged Dr Donkor's role as Minister of Power during the period when the government negotiated with ASKA Energy to provide additional electricity for Ghana amid the severe power crisis known as 'Dumsor'. His lawyers noted that these negotiations occurred during widespread power shortages and load-shedding in the country.
The statement revealed that a technical team consisting of representatives from various stakeholders in the electricity sector was dispatched to Istanbul, Turkey, to inspect equipment intended to generate electricity for Ghana. This trip, as per the lawyers, was part of the standard pre-shipment process.
Dr Donkor's legal team emphasized that he never met Asante Berko during the negotiations and has not encountered him since. They further denied any discussions or receipt of personal benefits from Berko or any other individual.
The lawyers added that any person who may have used Dr Donkor's name to demand money did so for their personal gain. They also questioned whether the evidence presented during Berko's trial in the US implicated the former minister in demanding or receiving money.
Dr Donkor's lawyers argued that references during the trial to a 'Senior Ghana Official' did not constitute evidence of wrongdoing by him. They warned against publications or statements that could harm the former minister's reputation, stating that any such content would lead to immediate legal action.
