Kumasi: The Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has been selected to train the required workforce in pharmaceutical manufacturing process technology at the middle level. The selection, made as part of a Chinese government-supported project, comes after the University demonstrated a commitment to advancing Ghana's goal of becoming the regional hub for vaccine and pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa.
According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Gabriel Dwomoh, the Vice-Chancellor of KsTU, announced these developments at the University's 24th congregation ceremony in Kumasi. He emphasized the institution's focus on establishing both local and international collaborations to foster economic development. The mandate to train the workforce in pharmaceutical manufacturing technology follows KsTU's partnership with the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) to establish a Luban Workshop, a Chinese-led international vocational education programme similar to the existing Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC Centre), which offers practical training for students.
As part of this initiative, KsTU has renovated its pharmaceutical laboratories, equipping them with modern tools to facilitate practical training. At the congregation ceremony, 1,620 students graduated with various master's, bachelor's, and diploma degrees. Professor Dwomoh also highlighted the achievements of female students in science-related fields, noting that the University would award scholarships starting in the 2025/2026 academic year to female engineering students who have won the Women in Engineering (WINE) Competition for three consecutive years.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged graduates to be innovative, proactive, and principled as they embark on their professional careers, reminding them of the substantial knowledge and skills they have acquired. He stressed the importance of continuous learning in an era characterized by technological advancements, machine learning, and the Internet of Things.
Nana Addae Gyamera, Feyiase Hene, also addressed the graduates, urging them to look beyond personal gains and use their skills to transform communities and improve lives. He stated, "True success is measured not solely by personal achievement, but by the positive impact you make in the lives of others. The challenges before us demand not only theoretical knowledge but practical, technology-driven solutions."
