KRACHI EAST: Residents of Krachi East in the Oti Region have expressed support for Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, following his decision to suspend parliamentary proceedings indefinitely. The move is being credited with averting a potential crisis amid escalating tensions between the Majority and Minority factions in the house. According to Ghana News Agency, Krachi East residents have applauded Speaker Bagbin for his decisive action, noting that it prevented potential chaos and instability. Many locals, including traders and community members, have voiced their appreciation for the Speaker's intervention. "Had the Speaker not intervened, Ghana would have descended into the brink of collapse," said Madam Abena Mansah, a trader at Dambai market, highlighting the critical role Mr. Bagbin played in maintaining order. The call for mediation was echoed by others engaged in daily activities near the River Oti landing facility, who urged the Council of State Members and National Peace Co uncil to play a role in resolving the parliamentary impasse. "We urge the Council of State and National Peace Council to engage both parties to reduce tensions," stated Mr. Joaquin Kwame Dakla, a resident of Dambai Gbanzaba. The suspension, announced on October 21, 2024, followed chaotic scenes in Parliament over the issue of which party held the majority. Speaker Bagbin had declared four parliamentary seats vacant, citing constitutional provisions against MPs defecting to other parties. This decision, which affected the balance of power in Parliament, is being contested in the Supreme Court by the opposition National Democratic Congress, which claims the majority status. Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, an MP for Effutu Constituency, led the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to the Supreme Court to seek clarity on the constitutional interpretation. In response to the Speaker's actions, NPP legislators, under Mr. Afenyo-Markin's guidance, staged a walkout to avoid further disruptions. With the NPP absent, Speak er Bagbin declared that there were insufficient MPs to conduct proceedings, leading to the indefinite suspension.
