Accra: The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stated that the government expects the Black Stars to reach at least the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The team, having won the tournament four times in its history, is anticipated to demonstrate its status as one of the continent's best and should not settle for less.
According to Ghana Web, Kofi Adams emphasized that his administration will support the team but expects them to change the narrative regarding their recent poor performances and deliver better results. Speaking on Sports Check aired on GhanaWeb TV, Adams made it clear that any performance below the quarter-final stage would be deemed a failure under his leadership.
"Considering our name and pedigree, anything below the quarter-finals means it would have been better if we hadn't gone. For AFCON, anything below the quarter-final stage is unacceptable. We must set a standard and let the players know the flag they are holding," he stated. Adams underlined that the quarter-final stage is the minimum expectation, urging the team to aim for gold, as the nation would celebrate such an achievement. However, he emphasized that reaching the quarter-finals is the foundational expectation.
