Sunyani: The chiefs of Kobedi in the Sunyani West Municipality are preparing to perform rituals to facilitate the re-opening of the Kobedi AME Zion Basic School. This decision comes after Mr. Issah Baffoe, the Sunyani West Municipal Director of Education, confirmed the necessity of these rituals.
According to Ghana News Agency, the closure of the school was ordered by Nana Ameyaa Ansu Gyeabour I, the queen-mother of the town, until the rituals are completed to lift a curse allegedly placed against the school. The curse, claimed by a community member asserting spiritual ownership, is believed to have led to the demise of two headmasters between December 2025 and April 2026.
Since Monday, May 19, teachers have ceased attending classes, leaving the school locked, as the community associates the deaths with the curse. Mr. Baffoe, in a phone interview with GNA, mentioned that the reasons for the alleged curses are still unclear. However, discussions with the queen-mother have confirmed the need for rituals to appease the local deity before resuming school activities.
Mr. Baffoe stated that the community began performing the necessary rituals today, and he assured that classes are expected to resume on Monday, May 25, 2026.
