Kumasi: The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) branch, has announced plans for industrial action in solidarity with the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) and other health worker organisations at the hospital.
According to Ghana News Agency, the association, in a letter dated June 6, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the Board of KATH, declared that nurses and midwives would join the ongoing strike from 0800 hours on Sunday, June 7, 2026, if the suspension of the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, by the Minister of Health, was not revoked.
The association labeled the two-week suspension of the CEO as 'unnecessary,' arguing that it does not address the significant pressure, infrastructural problems, congestion, inadequate logistics, and resource constraints faced by the hospital daily. The GRNMA emphasized that patient safety and quality healthcare delivery could not be achieved through the suspension of the CEO, stating that health professionals are working under 'extremely difficult conditions' that such actions do not resolve.
The association highlighted that KATH is one of the largest referral and teaching hospitals in Ghana and the sub-region, receiving substantial patient referrals from various regions, while its existing infrastructure, equipment, logistics, and supplies have not kept pace with increasing healthcare demands.
The GRNMA urged the Ministry of Health to expedite the operationalization of long-awaited health facilities intended to alleviate congestion at KATH. They also appealed for urgent retooling of the hospital and its referral facilities, including infrastructural expansion and adequate resource allocation, to make KATH a true Centre of Excellence comparable to internationally recognized tertiary hospitals.
The association demanded the immediate withdrawal of the CEO's suspension and his empowerment to manage the hospital, especially in safeguarding the physical and mental health of health professionals at the emergency department. The letter expressed hope that the Board of KATH would take necessary actions to ensure peace and harmony in the hospital and prevent any large-scale industrial action that could severely impact health services at the hospital.
