Accra: Kafui Dey has suggested introducing seat fillers, particularly university students living close to the event venue, as a practical solution to help address delays during the Telecel Ghana Music Awards. Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on March 28, 2026, while reviewing the standard of hosting at the awards over the years, the broadcaster acknowledged the progress made so far but pointed out that late starts is a key issue that needs attention.
According to Ghana Web, international awards shows like the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards use seat fillers, and Kafui Dey believes this is something that Charterhouse could consider adopting to improve the timing and smooth running of events. He emphasized that employing students from nearby universities such as UPSA, UniMAC, and UG could help in filling the empty seats at the start of the event. These students would be briefed to come dressed formally and occupy the seats until the main guests arrive.
Kafui Dey articulated that if the event were to start at 8 o’clock and was only half-full, the presence of students would ensure a more visually appealing and seamless commencement of the ceremony. This approach could potentially mitigate the issue of late arrivals, allowing the event to proceed as scheduled.
When asked whether he would consider hosting the TGMA in the future, Dey expressed his willingness to take on the role if offered the opportunity. He cited his experience hosting concerts, including a recent event at the Polo Grounds, as evidence of his capability and enthusiasm for music events.
Over the years, organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards have faced consistent backlash for delays in starting the ceremony, which often runs into the early hours of the next day.
