JUSAG Strike Brings Cape Coast Court Complex to a Standstill

Cape Coast:An unusual, deafening silence enveloped the Cape Coast Court Complex on Monday as the nationwide strike by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) halted judicial activities in the Central Regional capital.

According to Ghana News Agency, when the facility was visited at about 0800 hours, the three main entrances to the court complex were locked, with red bands tied across the gates indicating the closure to staff, lawyers, litigants, and the general public. Security personnel were present to prevent unauthorized entry.

The usual activity of a working court day, including lawyers moving between registries and litigants waiting for their cases, was absent. JUSAG declared an indefinite strike effective Monday, November 2, due to the government's failure to approve the Judicial Council's recommendations on the 2026 salary review for Judicial Service staff.

The closure left some litigants and members of the public stranded, including a 75-year-old man who had traveled for a chieftaincy case. The strike also affected traders, including egg sellers and vendors, who rely on the court's daily human traffic for their livelihood. They expressed concerns over the impact of the closure on their businesses and called for a quick resolution to the dispute.
