John Boadu Returns to Lead Ghana’s NPP as National Chairman

Accra:Four years after a significant electoral defeat, John Boadu has returned to a leadership position within Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP), now serving as the party's National Chairman alongside Justin Frimpong Kodua, the man who previously unseated him.

According to Ghana Web, Boadu's comeback comes after a long history with the NPP, where he climbed through the ranks from grassroots roles to national leadership. His political journey has been marked by various challenges, including allegations of involvement in illegal mining, which he has consistently denied, seeking official investigations to clear his name.

Boadu was originally elected as the NPP's General Secretary in 2018, a role that placed him at the heart of the party's organisational efforts, especially during the 2020 general elections. However, in 2022, he lost his re-election bid to Justin Frimpong Kodua, marking a notable shift in the party's leadership.

Following his defeat as General Secretary, Boadu transitioned to public-sector administration, serving as the Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA). Despite this setback, he maintained an active role in political discussions, particularly regarding illegal mining, and continued to support party members like Chairman Wontumi during legal challenges.

Boadu's recent election as National Chairman on October 3, 2026, marks his return to the NPP's executive leadership. His victory over Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko and Paul Afoko positions him to guide the party as it prepares for the 2028 elections. This leadership role presents both an opportunity for a political resurgence and a challenge to unify the party and address the issues that led to its loss in the 2024 general elections.
