Accra: The JJ Rawlings Foundation has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Sergeant Peter Tasiri Azongo, who died on Sunday, February 15. Sgt Tasiri was recognized as a pivotal non-commissioned officer whose relentless efforts contributed significantly to the June 4, 1979 uprising.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Foundation released a statement acknowledging Sgt Tasiri's instrumental role in the events that were sparked by severe economic hardships and rampant corruption, which had severely crippled the nation at that time. As a native of the Kusaug Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Sgt Tasiri and his comrades played a critical role in freeing Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings from incarceration following his arrest during the May 15, 1979 insurrection.
The Foundation's statement expressed solidarity with all Ghanaians in mourning Sgt Tasiri's death, extending heartfelt condolences to his family. "Sgt Tasiri rest well. Your sacrifices helped to lay the foundation for the socio-political transformation that Ghana enjoys today. We will endeavour to keep the light you all lit alight and carve your memories in stone," the statement concluded.
